WoW Forever name generator: first and last names

Name Forge makes character names for World of Warcraft: Forever. Pick a race - it brings its faction with it - then a class and a gender, and each name comes out in the sound of that race: rough and heavy for orcs and dwarves, flowing for night elves, airy for the new Skyborne. Alliance or Horde, male, female or unisex, every race and every class: it is a free World of Warcraft character name generator, and Reforge gives you another one for as long as you keep pressing it.

Forever gives a character two names, and Name Forge forges both: the first name and the second name - the last name, or surname, that Warcraft characters have never had before. The second name fits the class, names a trade the character works at - any trade, or the one you pick - or is forged from the same syllables as the first name. Found a first name you like? Lock it with the padlock beside it and Reforge gives you second name after second name until the two belong together. And when a name is nearly right, Advanced takes it apart.

Above the name you pick where second names come from - by class, by trade or forged - and the Trade panel over the forge holds the trade to take them from. Change anything and the forge reforges the half it touches by itself. Length, behind the arrows beside each name, keeps the first name between as few and as many letters as you set, anywhere from 4 to the game's 12, and a Forged second name too; a second name by class or by trade is a whole word and comes as it is. The syllables do not reach every length - fewer than one name in fifty has just four letters, and as few have more than nine - so at the ends you get the nearest there is.

Advanced: build a name part by part

Advanced, the panel under the forge, is a workshop where every part of a name is a reel of its own: the three syllables of the first name, and the two halves of the second name - or the whole word, when it does not split. A reel holds every part of its kind in the game, from every race and class at once, so the opening of one race's name can meet the ending of another's. On top of those, the reels hold parts of their own that no race, class or trade owns - Warcraft places, creatures and old names - which the forge never uses and only the workshop gives you.

That is Combined, the first choice at the top of the panel. Class keeps the reels to what your character is forged from - the syllables of the race, gender and class you picked, and the class's second names - and Trade to the same syllables and the trade's second names. Forged turns the second name into syllables of your character too. A second name of the wrong shape for the one you pick is rebuilt from it at random.

Click a part to search for another. Type a few letters and the parts that start with them come first, then those that have them anywhere; tap one and it drops into place, and the search stays open so you can try the next. Or write a part of your own in the field under the search and press Use: it drops into place, locked, and from then on every reel of its kind holds it too, first in the search, with a cross to forget it. Your own parts are kept in this browser only, and the forge never uses them. Scroll over a part, or swipe it on a phone, to turn it through every part it can hold in alphabetical order. The arrow under a part spins it at random, and the eye hides it, so the name is spelt from the parts that are left. The padlock holds a part as it is: nothing turns it, and a name you take down with To Advanced keeps the locked parts in their places. The workshop sets the parts side by side just as they are, without the forge's smoothing at the seams, and leaves the in-game rules to you.

To Advanced, under Reforge, takes the name on the stage down to the workshop. The arrow beside the name, Random, spins every part at once, all but the locked and the hidden ones, and the star puts the workshop's name into Saved. Whatever you change in the workshop goes up to the stage as well, into each half you have not locked there, whatever Length you set - that is for the forge alone. Nothing you spin or pick there lands in Recent.

Every name works in game

First name and second name are one word each: letters only, 2–12 characters, and never the same letter three times in a row. No spaces, no hyphens, no titles.

A WoW name generator for every race

Every race has its own syllables, and its own for male, female and unisex, so a name sounds like the race you picked and not like the one beside it. Unisex names lean on the endings both sides share. They stand in the order the tiles do: Alliance first, then Horde.

Human name generator
Alliance. Plain, short names of the kind the human kingdoms of Azeroth already carry - the most neutral sound on either side, and the easiest to say out loud. Humans field seven classes, as many as any race in the game.
Dwarf name generator
Alliance. Blunt consonants and short vowels - and in Forever a dwarf can be a Shaman. The names come out thick and stubby, built to be said slowly.
Night elf name generator
Alliance. Long vowels and soft endings, the oldest sound on the Alliance side. Names flow rather than land, and the Druid class has been theirs longer than anyone's.
Gnome name generator
Alliance. Quick, clipped and a little mechanical, the way gnome names have always been - short syllables that snap together and rarely run long.
High Order name generator
Alliance. The Kirin Tor's name for their Skyborne, with light, airy elven names. New in Forever, and the only race on the Alliance side that can be both a Mage and a Druid.
Orc name generator
Horde. Hard and guttural, heavy on the tongue - and in Forever an orc can be a Mage. The stress falls on the first syllable and the name stops there.
Undead name generator
Horde. Cold, grim names for the Forsaken - and in Forever an undead character can be a Paladin. Hard consonants over flat vowels, with very little warmth in them.
Tauren name generator
Horde. Open vowels and calm, unhurried syllables, slower than anything else on either side. One of only two Horde races that can be a Druid, the other being the Windshaper.
Troll name generator
Horde. A hissing, rhythmic sound of its own - and in Forever a troll can be a Warlock. Trolls field seven classes, the widest spread anywhere in the Horde.
Windshaper name generator
Horde. The Earthen Ring's name for their Skyborne, the same light, airy elven names as their Alliance kin. New in Forever, and the one Horde race whose names sound nothing like the rest of the side they fight for.

Names possible counts first name × second name for that race, every class and all three genders, with the default By class second names. By trade or Forged give a different, and usually larger, count for the same race.

A name generator for every profession

With the second name set to By trade, it names the trade the character works at instead of the class - any profession a Warcraft character can pick up, from Blacksmithing to First Aid, and the same pool for every race and class.

Blacksmithing name generator
3.2 billion possible names. The heaviest trade of the thirteen, and the second names land that way - metal, heat, and the tools that shape them.
Mining name generator
2.4 billion possible names. Names out of the deep: rock, ore, and the work of getting at it.
Herbalism name generator
3.1 billion possible names. Green, growing things, and the patience of picking them one at a time.
Alchemy name generator
1.7 billion possible names. Glass, fumes and change - the least literal pool of the thirteen.
Enchanting name generator
2.2 billion possible names. These lean on the arcane rather than on a workbench, so they read as titles more than as jobs.
Inscription name generator
1.5 billion possible names. Ink, paper, and the slow making of marks that mean something.
Tailoring name generator
2.3 billion possible names. Cloth, cut and stitch, and the softest sound of any trade here.
Leatherworking name generator
1.9 billion possible names. The older skinning trades, worked by hand and named for it.
Engineering name generator
3.0 billion possible names. The one trade whose names are allowed to be funny - springs, charges, and things that go off early.
Jewelcrafting name generator
1.4 billion possible names. Small, hard, bright things, cut and set into something worth wearing.
Cooking name generator
2.6 billion possible names. Heat, pots, and the feeding of a raid that never says thank you.
Fishing name generator
2.6 billion possible names. Water, patience and the long wait - the quietest pool of the thirteen.
First Aid name generator
1.0 billion possible names. The smallest pool and the plainest: cloth, binding, and keeping someone upright a little longer.

Questions

Is Name Forge free?
Yes. No account, no ads, and your saved names stay in your own browser.
Is the second name the same as a last name?
Yes. Forever gives every character two names, and the second one is what players and the press call the last name or the surname. Name Forge says second name because the two halves also go by the main name and the secondary name.
Does it work for WoW Classic or retail?
Yes, as a plain WoW name generator it works anywhere: the first names follow the same character name rules every Warcraft realm has, Classic and retail included. The second name is Forever's own - a Classic or retail character only carries one name, so take the first half and leave the rest.
Are these good roleplay names?
That is what the second name is for. An RP name that says the class or the trade your character works at reads as a character rather than as a random word, and Forever is the first Warcraft game to give you somewhere to put it.
Is the name free on my realm?
That can only be checked in the game. If a name is taken, lock the part you like and Reforge the other one.
What are the Skyborne?
The new race in WoW: Forever: elves descended from Highborne exiles, who made a pact with the wind spirits and took to the skies. They can join either faction, and each side calls them by its own name: the Alliance's Kirin Tor know them as the High Order, the Horde's Earthen Ring as the Windshaper. High Order can be Mages and Windshaper Shamans, and both can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids. Their names have a light, elven sound.

Names follow the in-game rules: letters only, 2–12 characters, no letter three times in a row. Race and class combinations as of the WoW: Forever launch.
